We were on the road by 9, heading toward Katherine. We had just turned onto the highway when we
passed another car and caravan. What a
small world, Simon recognised the car and driver, he called them up on the two
way and we turned around around and caught up.
It was Morris and Lyn from Albany.
We continued to Adelaide River, 57 kilometres from the
caravan park we had stayed at, and home to the Adelaide River War
Cemetery. This is Australia's only war
cemetery on native soil. There are
graves of 434 military personnel and 63 civilians, all of whom died during the
Japanese air raids. There are also
memorials for those lost in Timor and other northern regions. The cemetery had beautiful gardens and was so
well maintained. It was a very moving
place. It was so sad how young most of
the service people buried there were, with many under the age of twenty.
We continued to Katherine, stocked up on supplies and
then drove west. The scenery was
spectacular, especially with the sun shining down on the escarpment. We stopped at Victoria River, within the
Gregory National Park for the night.
What a lovely spot, we were quite surprised. We walked over the bridge that crosses the
Victoria River. What a view - just
magic. Although Chloe didn't think so
when her brand new thong fell down into the river. She was devastated. At least it was a thong and not her!
