The Places We've Been

The Nullarbor and beyond, including Smoky Bay (29/10/11 - 3/11/11)

On Saturday we left Kalgoorlie and headed to the dreaded Nullarbor!  Big day on Saturday - 650kms and driving straight into a head wind - not so great for the fuel consumption!  Made it to Cocklebiddy Saturday arvo and set up camp at the caravan park (basic as it was!) but importantly it had nice showers and toilets!  Up early and at Arubiddy Station (where Simon worked in 1991) by 8.30am - just in time for morning tea and mustering.  What an experience - sheep mustering on a 900,000 acre sheep station.  Not only did we see sheep, but we saw wild turkeys, kangaroos and an emu's nest, plus 3 very friendly dogs and 2 other kids in Declan and Caitlin.  The kids (and Simon & I) had such a fantastic day.  Thank you Barbara and Peter for welcoming us onto your property and your amazing hospitality.  A great day was had by all and one we will never forget.

Another big day of driving on Monday.  The speccy Great Australian Bight, old Telegraph Station in Eucla and a hole of golf!  Plus our first bush camp - west of Yalata on the Nullabor.  Lots of dust, a fire and marshmallows.  The kids loved it.  Paid alot for fuel at WA/SA Border - $1.90 p/litre.  But cheaper than Nullabor which was $2.20 p/litre!!  Easier day on Tuesday - stocked up in Ceduna and then arrived in sleepy, beautiful Smoky Bay (40kms south of Ceduna) in time to watch the Melbourne Cup.  We had a beachfront caravan site all to ourselves.  Plus the sun was shining finally!!! Fantastic place to unwind.  Enjoyed a dozen fresh oysters for $6 that had only been harvested 1 1/2 hours earlier!

Next stop...Streaky Bay.
