Port Lincoln (9/11/11 - 13/11/11)

Onto Port Lincoln for 4 days.  Another great caravan park overlooking the water and a jetty for more squid.  Ben caught his first squid but unfortunately it fell off on the way up!  Thankfully Ben wasn't too disappointed he was just impressed he had caught a squid!  This lovely town reminds us so much of Albany although it is hard to believe the population is half of ours.  The fishing industry is huge and apparently this town has the most millionaires per head of population in Australia.  This is quite obvious with the many luxury boats and fishing boats at the marina, port and private jetties.  Another seafood haven - although we have now overdosed on oysters.  Squid tonight.  A highlight of our time here and our trip so far was a "Swim with the Blue Fin Tuna" trip that we did on Thursday.  We all wetsuited up, along with booties and gloves and hopped into a holding pond about 15 minutes off shore with blue fin tuna, ranging in size from 30 - 60kg.  They are huge and so quick!  The kids' enthusiasm did diminish slightly when they saw the size of the fish and started feeling cold.  However they both did see the tuna under the water and also had the opportunity to feed the tuna and other fish and interact with many marine species in the touch pool.  Chloe held the biggest green lip abalone we have ever seen and both the kids got to hold scallops that were chattering to them.  Simon and Donna both fed the tuna whilst in the water - quite a scary experience initially as they swipe the fish out of your hand so quickly.  We were then convinced by the skipper to be in the water while he threw a bucket load of fish to the tuna right near us.  It created a frenzy - a tuna spa!!!  A few squeals from Donna but we both survived and are glad we did it.  This tour was topped off by a trip back to the harbour and a lot of commentary about the town and fishing industry.  A great 3 hours was had by all.

Port Lincoln has been a great place to unwind and do very little else.  We leave here tomorrow for the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula and the build up for the drive to Ayres Rock is commencing.  None of us are looking forward to the 1200km drive or the hot weather ahead, although are excited about seeing Coober Pedy and Ayres Rock.
