Byron Bay (29/2/12 - 1/3/12)

We spent Thursday in Byron Bay.  WOW – what a place – so many extremes.  So busy, so many tourists, beautiful beaches, friendly locals, heaps of hippies and backpackers, heaps of shops and eating places, so much accommodation, lots of skateboarders and beautiful sunshine.  Plus a lady begging for money!

The kids enjoyed a play at the park at Main Beach and Simon enjoyed some retail therapy.   We loved the Byron Bay Lighthouse.  This is the most eastern point of mainland Australia.  The views were spectacular from here and the dolphins put on a great show for us.  The kids really enjoyed the Lighthouse Museum - the ladies working there were so lovely and went out of their way to be helpful.  We even got a sneak peak inside the lighthouse (which is not normally open).  We also discovered that Bryon Bay once had a whaling station.  We also saw some items from a ship wrecked at Main Beach in the 1920's.  Part of the wreck is still visible from Main Beach.  The kids definitely got their education quota today!

We then had a swim at Tallows Beach, which was just beautiful.  Loved it.

Late Thursday afternoon we went back to Main Beach and met up with Wal, Kristy, Abby, Lachie and Sonny, who live in Brunswick Heads.  Wal and Simon are old friends, who grew up in Corrigin together.   We had a great catch up with them and yummy fish and chips for tea.  The wind definitely picked up though, so we chose not to have a swim.

Byron Bay was definitely worth seeing.  It was a bit too hectic for Simon, but Donna really enjoyed it.
